Figure 2-55: While the bird is flying, press the AF-ON button to track its movement. After the bird lands, release the AF-ON button to stop focus tracking. This locks the focus so you can recompose.

Back-button focus for a stationary subject:

Position the AF sensor over the subject you want to focus on

Press the AF-ON button with your thumb

Remove your thumb from the AF-ON button

Recompose the frame as desired

Take a picture by pressing the shutter-release button

Back-button focus for a moving subject:

Position the AF sensor over the subject you want to photograph

Press and hold the AF-ON button with your thumb while the subject is moving

Take a picture by pressing the shutter-release button
